Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's, AS 29.45.030(e); the Alaska entry records it. Wrangell administers it under Wrangell Municipal Code 5.04.040 through the Finance Department at City Hall. Who qualifies. A resident who is a disabled veteran on January 1 of the assessment year - 50 percent or more, rated by the branch of service or VA, or an Alaska Territorial Guard disability - and owns and occupies the property as the primary residence and permanent place of abode, and is eligible for the Permanent Fund Dividend for that year or the year before (or would have been, had they applied). A widow or widower at least 60 on January 1 of a person who qualified keeps the exemption. The finance director must require evidence of the disability rating; the application asks for proof of 50 percent or more and the owners' dates of birth and Social Security numbers. Deadline. First-time applications are due by March 1 of the first year (WMC 5.04.040(D)); the 2026 timeline set March 2, 2026, since March 1 fell on a Sunday. Applications are accepted at Wrangell City Hall until 5 p.m., with a drop box after hours; mailed ones must be postmarked by the deadline. Subsequent annual applications are not required, but every exemption holder must report any change in ownership, use, residency, permanent place of abode or status of disability. Late applications. The Assembly may, for good cause, waive a missed deadline and authorize the finance director to accept the application as timely, but the request must be in writing and filed by April 15 of the assessment year (WMC 5.04.040(D)). A claimant whose application is approved after paying is refunded. Where to file. City and Borough of Wrangell, City Hall, 205 Brueger Street, P.O.
