Woburn Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions (Clauses 22 to 22F)

Woburn’s exemptions table gives every category the statute and an additional exemption beside it, so a veteran rated 10 to 99 percent receives $800 and a 100 percent veteran $2,000; it records that all categories were uniformly increased by up to 100 per cent beginning in fiscal 2020, within the prior-year minimum-tax limit.

Also called: property tax, clause 22, 22E, veterans exemption, assessors, Woburn.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The City of Woburn grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a city can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessing Department’s exemptions table gives each qualification an exemption and an additional exemption beside it: $400 and $400 for a veteran rated 10 to 99 percent, $1,000 and $1,000 for a 100 percent veteran, $175 and $175 for a surviving spouse or a person over 70, $500 and $500 for an elderly person, and $437.50 and $437.50 for a blind person. The page records that “beginning in fiscal year 2020 (July 1st, 2019) the amount of the exemption for all categories was uniformly increased by a factor of up to 100 percent”, and states that the additional amount “cannot reduce the net real estate tax on the domicile below the net real estate tax on the domicile in the prior fiscal year”, the section’s own limit. The additional exemption reaching every category is what section 5C½ does; clause 22J reaches the veterans’ alone. The page names no clause, and no council vote was found on the city’s site; ask the assessors for the acceptance behind the additional exemption. Certain exemptions also qualify for a reduction on the water and sewer bill, which the Water/Sewer Department answers for. The city’s clause 22 sheet, posted for fiscal 2025, prints only the statute’s amounts for each clause and a residence test of five years before filing, where the statute now asks two consecutive years. The city’s site has moved from cityofwoburn.com, which answers 403 to curl, to woburnma.gov. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Woburn Veterans’ Services. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
