Winchester Local Option Veterans’ Exemption

Winchester’s tax relief page takes the state additional exemption and a local additional veterans’ exemption, both at income limits of $46,300 single and $56,500 married, with the local option requiring two years of residency and current taxes.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Winchester.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The assessor’s tax relief programs page lists, under state programs, the additional veterans’ exemption, the 12-81g(a) doubling of the base exemption for income up to $46,300 single or $56,500 married, the 12-81l amounts. Its local additional veterans’ exemption, the 12-81f option, uses the same income limits and requires a resident of Winchester for two or more years who is the record owner of or holds life use of the residence and whose taxes are current. Applications are due in the February 1 to October 1 filing period and are biennial. The local option’s own application records the claimant’s total income and requires the assessor to check taxes current and note residency before allowing the claim. The page prints no amounts for either program: the state additional exemption is twice the base exemption, and the local option’s amount is up to the assessor. Winchester’s basic veterans’ exemption amount is not printed either; the statutory wartime exemption is $1,000 under 12-81(19). Winchester’s code is on eCode360, which stayed behind its Cloudflare challenge (dubiousenvelope/vettoc issue 168), and the town did not answer OLR’s 2023 survey. Ask the assessor which amounts apply.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
