A veterans treatment court in County Court at Law No. 2 for misdemeanors and felonies, with a pretrial diversion track that can avoid a conviction. It states both of Government Code 124.002's eligibility routes, the rehabilitation route included, and considers discharges other than honorable or general case by case.
Also called: veterans court, veterans treatment court, WCVTC, County Court at Law 2, pretrial diversion, probation, peer mentors, Government Code 124, Georgetown.
Williamson County runs a Veterans Treatment Court under Government Code chapter 124; see the Texas entry. Judge Laura Barker presides, in County Court at Law No. 2 at the Williamson County Justice Center, 405 Martin Luther King Street, Georgetown, with dockets at 2 and 4 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays. It is supported by a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission's Fund for Veterans' Assistance.
Who it takes. Veterans and serving members of every branch, reserves, National Guard and active duty included, aged 18 or over, charged with a crime in Williamson County that suits the court. The county states eligibility the way section 124.002(a) does: a mental health diagnosis that materially affected the conduct charged, or, considering the conduct, background and criminal history, a likelihood that the court will achieve public safety through rehabilitation. Among the Texas county courts in this catalog, only Williamson's and Tarrant's publish the second route.
Discharge. The court takes an honorable or general under honorable conditions discharge and considers "other discharge conditions ... on a case by case basis". Chapter 124 sets no discharge test, so a veteran with an other-than-honorable discharge should apply.
How it runs. Two tracks: pretrial diversion, which can avoid prosecution and a conviction, and probation. The track depends on the arrest and is explained before the veteran decides. Offenses must give the court at least 12 months' jurisdiction. Participants address substance use or mental health needs, keep or find work or school, attend court, meet probation officers and case managers, and take frequent drug and alcohol tests. Each is paired with a trained veteran peer mentor.
How to apply. Send the application, a DD-214 or orders, and a release of information to the programme case manager, who forwards them to the County Attorney. A lawyer's help is recommended but not required. Programme manager: 512-943-1664.
