Williamson Central Appraisal District: Disabled Veteran Exemptions

The Williamson Central Appraisal District's benefits page states the 100% homestead exemption as Tax Code 11.131 does, unemployability included, but its FAQ and online application page tell veterans they must be rated 100%. The county Tax Office's page wrongly suggests a disabled veteran's homestead gets the school tax ceiling.

Also called: property tax, appraisal district, WCAD, 11.131, 11.22, 11.26, tax ceiling, unemployability, homestead, surviving spouse, Georgetown.

For: Veteran or service member, child, survivor.

The exemptions are the State's; the Texas entries explain them. The Williamson Central Appraisal District grants them for property in Williamson County. What the district gets right. Its Property Tax Benefits page states the 100% homestead exemption as section 11.131 does: 100% disability compensation with a rating of 100% or a determination of individual unemployability. Its partial exemption page states section 11.22 correctly, including any one property owned on January 1, a rating by VA or the service branch, the five-year late window, and the $12,000 maximum at 65 or older, for blindness or for loss of use of a limb. It lets owners file the line-of-duty spouse exemption online and names it correctly. Where it contradicts itself. The district's homeowner FAQ says "If your disability rating is 100% you may qualify", and its online application page says "You must be rated as a 100% Disabled Veteran by the Veterans Affairs Administration to apply". A veteran rated below 100% but paid at 100% for individual unemployability qualifies under section 11.131(b); apply with the VA letter showing the unemployability award. The FAQ also describes a disabled veteran as one "disabled while serving", where the statute asks only that VA or the branch has found the disability service-connected. The county Tax Office. The Tax Assessor-Collector's Exemptions page says a 65-or-older person, a disabled person "or a disabled veteran (DV) with a service-connected disability" whose property is a residence homestead "may qualify", and that "These exemptions can freeze your taxes per the Property Tax Code (section 11.26)". The section 11.22 exemption is not limited to a homestead, and the section 11.26 school tax ceiling applies only to the 65-or-older and disabled person exemptions. A veteran gets the ceiling only by also qualifying as a disabled person under the Social Security test. The deferral the page describes does reach disabled veterans. The district is at 625 FM 1460, Georgetown 78626, 512-930-3787.
