Williams County Assessor: the Disabled Veterans Credit (an Out-of-Date Table)

The Williams County Assessor’s Office (206 E Broadway, Williston, (701) 577-4555) takes the State’s disabled veterans property tax credit for veterans rated 50% or more; its page still prints the old $8,100 table (up to $8,100 of taxable value at 100%), where the statute now reaches $9,000, and gives two first-year deadlines (April 1 and March 31).

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The credit is the State's, under Section 57-02-08.8 (the North Dakota entry explains it: the disability percentage applied against the first $9,000 of taxable valuation of the homestead). In Williams County the Assessor's Office takes the application. The county's page. "Disabled Veterans Credit. At a Glance: Benefit: Reduction of property's taxable value based on disability rating (up to $8,100 for 100% disability). Eligibility: U.S. veterans with a service-connected disability of 50% or more. Deadline: April 1 of the first year the credit is claimed." "For a married couple, if both individuals are eligible, then they can both apply, but their combined credits may not exceed 100% of $8,100 of taxable value on the property. A qualifying disabled veteran who acquires the homestead during the year may apply for credit for the portion of the year during which the veteran owns the homestead." Its table runs from $4,050 at 50% to $8,100 at 100%, and its application section says "Deadline: March 31 of the first year for which the credit is claimed". What is out of date. The $8,100 ceiling is the statute's older figure; the Tax Commissioner and the North Dakota entry give $9,000 of taxable valuation at 100% ($4,500 at 50%). Expect the statute's figure, and file by March 31 to meet both of the page's dates. The other lines. The same page carries the Blind/Disabled exemption, "also available to paraplegic disabled veterans" (up to $120,000 on the structure for a homeowner permanently disabled and confined to a wheelchair, February 1, with a physician's certificate), and the State's Homestead Credit and Primary Residence Credit. The Board's monthly abatement rulings show the office correcting disabled veteran credits for earlier years when a veteran applies late. Where.
