Will County Supervisor of Assessments: Veteran Exemptions
The Will County Supervisor of Assessments' exemption page still describes the standard homestead exemption for veterans with disabilities as it read before 2023: an honorable discharge, a home under $250,000 of value, and a full exemption at 70%. Since tax year 2023 the statute has no discharge test, no value cap, and exempts the first $250,000 of EAV at 70%.
Also called: property tax, Supervisor of Assessments, SHEVD, 15-169, PTAX-342, PTAX-341, returning veterans, 15-165, specially adapted housing, EAV, Joliet.
The exemptions are the State's; the Illinois entries explain them. In Will County the Supervisor of Assessments administers the standard homestead exemption for veterans with disabilities (PTAX-342), the returning veterans' exemption (PTAX-341) and the specially adapted housing exemption, and mailed 2026 renewal applications on April 10, 2026, holding exemption sign-up events across the county from April to June.
Where the page is out of date. Its section on the standard exemption under 35 ILCS 200/15-169 says:
- the veteran must have "an honorable discharge". Since tax year 2023 the section defines a veteran as an Illinois resident who served and has a VA-certified service-connected disability with compensation; the discharge requirement is gone.
- "The property's total EAV must be less than $250,000". That cap was removed for tax year 2023; a more valuable home gets the first $250,000 of equalized assessed value exempt and pays on the rest.
- at 70% or more "the residential property is exempt from taxation". The statute exempts the first $250,000 of EAV.
The page also says nothing of the surviving spouse rules added since 2023 (the spouse of a veteran who never claimed it, and a spouse receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation), the World War II veteran exemption from tax year 2024, or that a veteran rated 100% and permanent and total need not reapply each year once granted. Its amounts at 30% and 50% ($2,500 and $5,000) are right, as is its rule that a veteran who moves into a nursing home or VA facility keeps the exemption while the home is occupied by the spouse or left empty.
The other exemptions. The returning veterans' exemption is a $5,000 reduction in EAV for the year a veteran returns from active duty in an armed conflict and the following year, claimed on PTAX-341 each year. The specially adapted housing exemption under section 15-165, up to $100,000 of assessed value, is certified each year by the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs, and the page correctly says only one of the disability exemptions can be taken in a year.
