Wilkes County Tax Administration: Disabled Veteran Exclusion

Wilkes County's Tax Administration takes the State's disabled veteran exclusion, the first $45,000 of a permanent residence's value for a veteran with a permanent and total service-connected disability or adapted housing benefits, or the surviving spouse, on Form AV-9 with the NCDVA-9 certification; in February 2026 the Board approved late 2025 applications so owners could be refunded. 110 North Street, Wilkesboro, 336-651-7304.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exclusion is the State's, under G.S. 105-277.1C; see the North Carolina entry. Wilkes County's 2026 listing notice: "DISABLED VETERAN EXCLUSION: also may apply to a widow of a disabled veteran: Owner must have a permanent and total disability that is SERVICE-CONNECTED or receives benefits under 38 U.S.C. 2101 (specially adapted housing). Disability must be proven with a veteran's disability certification from the VA or other federal agency. Assessment reduction = FIRST $45,000 OF VALUE." The Tax Administration's forms page carries the application (AV-9, Elderly, Disabled, Disabled Veteran) and the NCDVA-9 Certification for Disabled Veterans. Late applications. The usual deadline is June 1 of the tax year (see the North Carolina entry). After the 2025 revaluation many owners applied only when their bills arrived; on February 17, 2026 the Board of Commissioners approved the Tax Department's list of late 2025 applications for homestead and veterans' exemptions under G.S. 105-282.1(a), which lets a board approve a late application "upon showing of good cause", so those who had paid could be refunded. An owner who missed a deadline should ask the Tax Department about the same route. Where. Wilkes County Tax Administration, 110 North Street, Wilkesboro, NC 28697; listing 336-651-7304, appraisal 336-651-7301; weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. A note. The notice says "If you have become eligible since January 1, 2021 for the exemption it will be necessary for you to make application"; once approved, the exclusion does not need a yearly reapplication unless the owner's status changes (see the North Carolina entry).
