The Whiteside County Recorder records a veteran's DD-214 at no charge with one certified copy included; each additional certified copy of a recorded discharge is $1.25, and a copy is issued only to a person with ID authorized to obtain it, the record being confidential under the Counties Code.
Also called: DD-214, DD214, military discharge, veterans discharge, recording, certified copy, no charge, confidential, Recorder, 55 ILCS 5/3-5015, [email protected], Sterling, Rock Falls, Morrison, Prophetstown, Fulton, Erie.
The rules are the State's; see the Illinois entry on 55 ILCS 5/3-5015. The county's Recorder - Land Records page prices the work in its own fee line: "VETERANS DISCHARGE (includes 1 certified copy) - NO CHARGE", and "*Each additional certified copy of recorded Discharge - $ 1.25". The page's pitch to the veteran: "Recording your DD-214 helps secure your discharge papers. Convenient to obtain certified copies later. must have ID & be authorized to obtain a copy (call the office for further info). Certified copies are as good as an original."
For a veteran who cannot find the DD-214 at all, the same page links the National Archives' request route - "The National Archives Link is provided for those who are trying to find a DD-214 and may be having difficulty: Request Military Service Records (This is not associated with Whiteside County)."
The Recorder's office also records service discharges among its "Description Of Service" list ("Service Discharges (DD214's)"), alongside property ownership to 1836, liens, UCC filings and subdivision covenants; documents are recorded under the State's standard-document rules and are presented as originals or certified copies with a self-addressed stamped envelope. The page's contact for corrections is [email protected], at the courthouse, 200 E. Knox Street, Morrison, IL 61270 (815-772-5270). The County Clerk's page (815-772-5189) names no discharge practice of its own.
