Where it applies
Written for the jurisdictions listed here.
- Whatcom County, WACounty
The Whatcom Transportation Authority, the public transportation benefit area serving the county, changed its fares on September 1, 2026, the first cash fare rise since 2008. Fixed-route service is now $2 a ride, with fare caps of $6 a day and $60 a month; the reduced fare is $1 a ride, capped at $6 a day and $30 a month. Veterans are named among the riders who qualify for the reduced fare, with riders 65 and over, paratransit-eligible riders, students and riders who meet disability or income tests.
The county's Veterans Advisory Board minutes of April 13, 2026 describe WTA bus passes as free to veterans with a DD-214; under the new fares a veteran pays the reduced fare on a Reduced Fare card. Umo Gold Cards became Reduced Fare cards on September 1; older cards had to be replaced at a WTA customer service office. Caps count only fares paid with the same card, app or bank card, not cash.
