Westbrook Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

Westbrook’s tax benefits page prints the basic veterans’ exemption at $2,000, disability exemptions by rating, a state additional that doubles the basic, a local additional at the state’s income limits, the 12-81(83) dwelling exemption and vehicle exemptions.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Westbrook.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The tax benefits and exemptions page requires applicants for “the basic $2,000 veteran’s exemption under §12-81(19)” to be Connecticut residents, owners or life-use holders as of October 1, with the DD-214 filed with the town clerk by September 30, and 90 days of wartime service - a 100 percent disabled veteran need not meet the 90-day test - applied to the assessed value of real estate or motor vehicles, leased vehicles included. Disabled veteran exemptions follow the rating and rise as of the assessment date after the veteran’s 65th birthday; the VA rating slip must reach the assessor before the Board of Assessment Appeals completes its duties in March. A “Surviving Spouse Rights” section reads: “The surviving spouse of any person, who at time of such person’s death was entitled to and had the exemption, shall be entitled to the same exemption.” The state additional veteran exemption “doubles the basic assessment exemption,” filed February 1 to October 1 and re-filed every two years; a local additional veteran exemption applies to veterans who meet the basic criteria and the state’s income limits on the same calendar, and prints no amount. For a veteran with a 100 percent service-connected permanent and total rating the page describes the 12-81(83) dwelling or motor vehicle exemption and the annual OPM application due January 1 under 12-93 as amended by the 2025 budget act’s section 235. Current servicemembers receive a total exemption on one vehicle, nonresidents serving on Connecticut-registered cars, and “any motor vehicle specially equipped or modified in a significant way for the purpose of transporting medically incapacitated individuals … is eligible for a total exemption,” applied for annually. Westbrook did not answer OLR’s 2023 survey, and its Municode entry hosts no documents (“This organization does not use MuniDocs to host documents”), so no local-option adoption record was found.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
