West Haven Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

West Haven’s guide gives a $6,000 veterans’ exemption and $12,000 to $21,000 by disability rating, and its Code § 211-6 adopts the 12-81g(b) option for a veteran rated 100 percent. The city also takes applications for an unemployability exemption under § 211-6 that the codified section does not contain.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, West Haven.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Assessor’s Office guide to veterans’ property tax exemptions gives the amounts off assessed value as $6,000 for a veteran with 90 days of wartime service, $12,000 at a VA rating of 10 to 25 percent, $15,000 at 26 to 50, $18,000 at 51 to 75, and $21,000 at 76 to 100 percent or for a veteran over 65 with any rating. The DD-214, honorable or other than honorable with a qualifying condition, goes to the City Clerk by September 30. The state additional exemption is filed from February 1 to October 1, 2026, every other year, with income limits of $46,300 single and $56,500 married. Code § 211-6, amended on August 27, 2015, gives a veteran the maximum 12-81(19) exemption, the specially adapted house under 12-81(21)(C), and for a veteran rated 100 percent the 12-81g(b) exemption in place of the 12-81g(a) one. West Haven has no 12-81f exemption in its code, and it did not answer OLR’s 2023 survey. The page also offers an application, revised December 16, 2025, for the exemption of a veteran rated totally disabled through individual unemployability, which it says is “provided for in The city of west Haven code of Ordinances Sec. 211-6”. The section as eCode360 prints it, current to June 23, 2025, has no such provision, and its list of laws not yet codified has none on taxation, so no adoption vote for 12-81pp was found. Ask the assessor. The 12-81(83) dwelling exemption is claimed on form D-2 by January 1 each year.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
