Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Wellesley grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The elected Board of Assessors’ page names W. Arthur Garrity, III the chair, Stephen R. Burtt and Stephen D. Mahoney the other members, at Town Hall, 525 Washington Street (781-431-1019, extension 2275), where the Assessor’s Office names Ellen M. Muller, MAA its director. The town’s Veteran Exemptions Guide, dated July 2026, prints clause 22 at $845 ($800 plus COLA), 22A at $1,585, 22B at $2,642, 22C at $3,170, 22D as a total exemption, 22E at $2,114, and a “Clause 22Z” total exemption for paraplegic veterans and their surviving spouses, the statute’s clause 22F. Each veterans’ amount is the statute doubled and raised by both years’ adjustments, what clauses 22I and 22J at 100 per cent produce, and the guide’s own HERO Act note records the acceptance: clause 22I and 22J “were accepted at the 2025 Annual Town Meeting to increase certain Veteran Exemptions by a Consumer Price Index (COLA) as determined by the Commission of Revenue and to increase the amount of eligible veteran exemptions by 100% of the personal exemption amount allowed by law.” Applications are due April 1 each year, and the guide asks for the six months before service or two consecutive years’ Massachusetts domicile the statute now asks for. The West Suburban Veterans District page names Dan O’Neill the Veteran Services Officer and Meganne Allison the District Administrator for Needham, Wayland, Wellesley, Weston and Westwood, with the Wellesley location at Town Hall, 525 Washington Street (Fridays), and gives 781-489-7509, where the EOVS directory lists Daniel O’Neill at the same address ((781) 850-5504, [email protected]). Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through West Suburban Veterans District: Dan O’Neill, Veteran Services Officer. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
