Wayne County: Where Veterans Claim Property Tax Relief

In Wayne County the disabled veteran exemption is filed with the city or township assessor, not the county. The County Treasurer's tax relief page lists poverty, deferment and hardship programs and never mentions it, so a 100% permanent and total or unemployable veteran must ask the assessor.

Also called: property tax, 211.7b, assessor, Treasurer, summer tax deferment, 211.51, hardship, foreclosure, DOOE, HOPE, Detroit.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Michigan's disabled veteran exemption takes the whole homestead off the tax roll (MCL 211.7b; see the Michigan entry). In Wayne County it is filed with the assessor of the city or township where the home is, any time in the calendar year, and once granted for taxes levied from 2025 it continues without refiling. What the county says. The Wayne County Treasurer collects delinquent taxes and runs foreclosure. Its Tax Exemption Programs page tells readers that "senior citizens, veterans, surviving spouses of eligible veterans, and disabled persons may be eligible for additional tax relief", then describes the homestead property tax credit, the poverty exemption, Detroit's HOPE programme, the home heating credit, the principal residence exemption and summer tax deferment. It does not mention the disabled veteran exemption, the largest of them, which is worth the entire bill. Its homestead credit text also gives a $135,000 taxable value cap, the figure MCL 206.520(1) fixed only through 2021 and has raised by inflation every year since. Summer tax deferment. Under MCL 211.51 an eligible veteran, serviceperson or surviving spouse whose household income was $40,000 or less can defer the summer bill to the winter due date, applying to the city or township treasurer by September 15. When taxes are already delinquent. The Treasurer's Distressed Owner Occupant Extension stops foreclosure for an owner-occupant with documented hardship while interest runs at 1.5% a month. Wayne County Veterans Services can also pay delinquent property taxes from the veterans relief fund for an indigent wartime veteran facing loss of the home; see the Wayne County relief entry.
