Waterbury Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

Waterbury’s assessor gives the wartime veterans’ exemption, a higher one for a disability rating, and for a veteran with lower income the state additional exemption, which doubles the one already received. OLR’s 2023 survey reports a 12-81kk primary-residence option that the city’s page does not mention.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Waterbury.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Waterbury’s Assessor’s Office page describes three veterans’ exemptions. A veteran who served at least 90 days in wartime gets one once the DD-214 is recorded with the Town Clerk before October 1; it need be recorded only once. A disabled veteran gets a higher exemption on submitting the VA benefit statement before October 1. A veteran with lower income who applies between February 1 and October 1, with proof of the prior year’s income, gets an additional exemption that “doubles the Veterans exemption that you already receive”, renewed every two years. Exemptions go on real estate first, and on motor vehicles for a veteran who owns none. The page prints no dollar amounts and no income limits. The doubling is C.G.S. 12-81g(a), whose income limit is the state’s under 12-81l: OPM set $45,200 single and $55,100 married for the 2025 grand list. OLR’s 2023 survey lists Waterbury among 21 towns that said they offer the 12-81kk exemption, 10 percent of the assessed value of the primary residence of a veteran with federal adjusted gross income of $50,100 or less. OLR says it could not verify adoption. Waterbury’s page does not mention the exemption, and no ordinance or Board of Aldermen vote adopting it was found; the city’s code is not on Municode or American Legal Publishing. Ask the assessor.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
