Washtenaw County Veterans Treatment Court

The county's veterans treatment court sits in the 15th District Court in Ann Arbor and takes misdemeanour cases, post-sentence, for 18 to 24 months. It bars anyone ever charged with criminal sexual conduct and needs the referring judge's and prosecutor's signatures, both stricter than the State statute.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Washtenaw County Veterans Treatment Court is run by the 15th District Court at the Washtenaw County Justice Center, 301 East Huron Street, Ann Arbor, under MCL 600.1200 to 600.1212 (see the Michigan entry on veterans treatment courts). It meets every other Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. It is a post-sentencing programme of 18 to 24 months of closely monitored probation and treatment, in phases, with sanctions and rewards. Who it takes. A veteran who was not dishonorably discharged, has a mental health or substance use condition, is not a violent offender or a danger to the community, and pleads, or could plead, guilty or no contest to a misdemeanour. Its referral process, revised in February 2026, excludes violent offenders as MCL 600.1200(k) defines them and anyone who has "ever been charged with (or convicted of) criminal sexual conduct in any degree". Where it is stricter than the statute. Section 600.1200(k) bars someone currently charged with, or who has pled guilty to, criminal sexual conduct; a charge that ended in acquittal or dismissal years ago does not bar entry under the statute but does here. The process also starts only with a referral form signed by both the referring judge and the referring prosecutor, where the statute requires the prosecutor's approval only when a dismissal, deferral or guidelines departure is on offer. Nobody has a right to admission, so the court may set these rules. The court does not list the statute's 180 days of active duty, which still applies. How to start. The completed referral form goes to the coordinator, Karen Finney ([email protected], 734-794-6761 extension 47542); the defendant then calls the 15th District Court Probation Department for an intake interview, brings the DD-214 and must watch a session before entry. A case from another court transfers under a memorandum of understanding signed by that court.
