Washtenaw County Clerk: DD-214 Copies and the Veteran ID Card
The County Clerk records DD-214s and gives the veteran or family two free certified copies at a time, but its fee schedule charges $5 for each copy beyond two, which MCL 35.32 does not allow for the veteran, heirs or a service officer. Its veteran ID card costs $10 and needs an honorable discharge.
Also called: DD-214, DD214, discharge, county clerk, certified copy, veteran ID card, vital records, Ann Arbor, $10.
Michigan county clerks record discharges, keep them confidential for 70 years and give copies free to the veteran and those working on the veteran's behalf (MCL 35.31 to 35.35; see the Michigan entry on discharge records).
Recording. A Washtenaw County resident brings the original discharge in person to the Clerk/Register's Vital Records Division, 200 North Main Street, Suite 100, Ann Arbor, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (734-222-6720); it is copied and handed back.
Copies. Free to the veteran named on the record and, with a certified death certificate and proof of relationship, to the spouse or immediate family, two certified copies at a time, in person, by mail or online (the online vendor still charges its service fee). The Clerk's fee schedule, which the fee resolution before the Board on October 7, 2026 keeps unchanged, lists "First 2 Copies $0, Additional Copies $5". MCL 35.32(2)(c) says the veteran, a person with the veteran's permission, the heirs and a service officer or county veterans counsellor working on a claim "shall not be charged" for that veteran's records, so a third copy is owed free too. The Clerk's page also leaves out the statute's access for a person with permission and for service officers.
Veteran ID card. The Clerk issues a photo veteran ID card to Washtenaw County residents, in person, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., for $10, on the original DD-214 (unless already on file) showing an honorable discharge "or equivalent status", and photo ID. Businesses that give a veteran discount often accept it.
Licence to sell goods. The Clerk also issues the veteran's licence under 1921 PA 359 (see the Michigan entry); the county Health Department's fee schedule exempts a licence holder from part of the State food service fees.
