Washoe County: Board-funded Veteran Service Officer positions and veterans grants

The Washoe County Board of County Commissioners funds two Nevada Department of Veterans Services Veteran Service Officer positions through annual interlocals hosted by the Human Services Agency - the current one runs October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027 - after replacing a failed Nation’s Finest subaward (resolution R25-118, $139,690.17) on October 28, 2025. The Board also passes $2,500 community grants to veterans nonprofits and accepted a $3,500 Reno Elks donation for the Veterans Treatment Court.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The county does not employ veterans service officers, but its Board of County Commissioners funds NDVS VSO positions serving Washoe County veterans. Under resolution R25-118 of October 28, 2025, the Board replaced a stalled American Rescue Plan Act subaward: it terminated the $139,690.17 subaward to Nation's Finest - Veterans Services, which supported 1.5 Veteran Service Officer "positions to provide veterans with personalized assistance with applications and appeals for veterans' benefits", and awarded the same amount to the State of Nevada Department of Veterans Services, this time for two VSO positions of the same description. The funding continues through an annual interlocal. The Board approved an Interlocal Contract between NDVS and the Washoe County Human Services Agency for the term of October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027 "to provide comprehensive and personalized veteran benefits screenings and assistance with applications for compensation, healthcare and survivor benefits" (item 10.F.5, August 25, 2026 meeting). A veteran who wants this help - the same free claims assistance as at any NDVS office - can reach it through the county's Human Services Agency or NDVS's Reno office. Other Board veteran business read in the year's agenda packets: $2,500 community grants voted to veterans-serving nonprofits (4 Heroes, October 14, 2025; Truckee Meadows Blue Star Mothers of Nevada #3, Nevada Veterans Coalition and Northern Nevada Legal Aid "for veterans and their families", December 9, 2025; a dental-care nonprofit serving impoverished veterans, August 25, 2026), and a $3,500 donation from Reno Elks Lodge #597 accepted June 23, 2026 for the District Court's Veterans Treatment Court operating expenses.
