The exemption is State law, Utah Code 59-2a-501 and 59-2a-502 since the 2025 recodification; the Utah entry explains the amounts and the rating bands. In Washington County the Auditor's Office administers it, at 111 East Tabernacle Street, St. George, UT 84770, 435-301-7220, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
What the county says. "This exemption is available to veterans disabled in military service, their unmarried surviving spouse or minor orphans. The primary property the applicant owns and resides in on September 1st of the current year, will be the property to receive the Tax Exemption. First time applicants must provide proof of service-connected disability and a copy of their DD214." "No exemption is allowed for any disability below 10%." "The Maximum exemption is up to $535,459 of Taxable Value based upon the percentage of disability." For a veteran who dies in the line of duty, the surviving spouse or minor orphan gets 100% of the property's value. The exemption covers the primary residence or tangible personal property held for personal use.
How. "Those seeking only this type of relief are to use the Veteran's Property Tax Relief application. Those seeking additional relief programs should use the Property Tax Relief Application. Applications are due every year by September 1st." The page also lists the deployed military exemption (active duty orders outside Utah for 200 days in a continuous 365-day period).
Refunds through the Board of Equalization. The County Commission, sitting as the Board of Equalization for personal property, regularly approves refunds to named veterans "Entitled to a Veteran's Exemption", typically $10 to $175 each, on its 2025-26 minutes; a disabled veteran who paid vehicle fees or personal property tax the exemption should have covered can appeal for the refund through the Auditor.
