Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Tennessee's disabled veteran property tax relief is a state payment toward the tax on the first $175,000 of a home's value; the Tennessee entries set out the rules. In Washington County the Trustee takes the applications - Rick Storey is the Trustee - at the Washington County Courthouse, 100 E. Main Street, Jonesborough (423-753-1602), and at the Johnson City office, 378 Marketplace Boulevard (423-610-7211, in the tax season since September 18, 2025 and daily from November 3, 2025). The Trustee's Tax Relief Program page names the required documents: a driver's license, a Medicare card, a Social Security card, and proof of income for the previous tax year; a disabled veteran applicant's eligibility is determined through VA information on consent forms, and the state's F-16 form is the veteran's application. The page names the deadline for the 2025 tax year as April 2, 2026; the state rule is thirty-five days after the delinquency date, with the taxes paid by then. The match. The page says Washington County "matches up to the state amount, not to exceed the billed amount" - a local supplement under 67-5-701(j), which the State entry on local government matching tax relief explains: the county adds a second payment toward the county tax equal to the state benefit, never more than the bill. Counties written so far vary; Shelby and Blount add nothing, Washington does. The tax rate and the calendar. On June 18, 2026 the Commission fixed the tax levy for the year from July 1, 2026 (Resolution 26-06-01) at $1.71 per $100 of assessed value - 68 cents general government, 49 cents schools, 25 cents debt service, 11.5 cents capital projects, 9 cents highway, 5 cents education capital and 3.5 cents solid waste, on total assessed value of about $5.84 billion. The Trustee's Your Property Taxes page still names "the 2023 county tax rate" of $2.15 with a different fund breakdown; that page is out of date. Tax notices go out in October and are payable through the end of February; interest of 1.5% a month runs from March 1, and a prepayment and partial payment programme lets a taxpayer pay ahead from October. What is coming. The Commission held a workshop on June 22, 2026 on implementing a property tax freeze program, and on July 27, 2026 adopted Resolution 26-07-22 establishing a Property Tax Freeze Implementation Committee. The state's tax freeze for homeowners 65 and older (67-5-702) takes effect in a county only when the county adopts it; Washington County has not yet, and an older veteran watching costs should watch for it.

Thresholds

Thresholds for Washington County Trustee: Disabled Veteran Property Tax Relief
GateRule
Permanent and total, as VA determines itWashington County matches the state payment toward the county tax, up to the billed amount. The rating route in 67-5-704(b)(3) asks for service-connected permanent and total disability as determined by VA, which a veteran paid at the total rate through unemployability that VA has found permanent also holds. It is recorded rather than enforced because the paraplegia, blindness and loss-of-limbs route and the prisoner of war route need no rating at all.
Or a named loss, at any ratingParaplegia or permanent paralysis of both legs and the lower body, legal blindness, or loss or loss of use of two or more limbs from a service-connected cause qualifies whatever the combined rating, as does one hundred percent permanent total disability from having been a prisoner of war. The state entry on disabled veteran property tax relief sets out the routes.
