Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's, by local option: Real Property Tax Law 458-a (the alternative exemption) and 458-b (the Cold War exemption); see the New York entries. Each county, town, village and school district sets its own cap, so one home can get a different exemption on each tax bill. The county's alternative exemption. Local Law 3 of 2014: 15% of assessed value for wartime service up to $33,000, 10% more for combat service up to $22,000, and half the veteran's VA disability rating times assessed value up to $110,000, each times the town's equalization rate. The county's table calls this the $220,000 level, effective March 1, 2015. Local Law 1 of 2014 counts a Gold Star parent as a qualified owner of a primary residence for the county exemption. Towns, villages and schools. The Alternative Veterans Levels table (dated February 22, 2018, with a 2023 change for Cambridge): towns from $60,000 (Jackson) and $80,000 (Putnam) to $240,000 (Fort Ann, Kingsbury, White Creek); the Village of Fort Ann has none; school districts Argyle, Cambridge and Stillwater at $40,000 and Hoosick Falls at $80,000. The Cold War exemption. Local Law 6 of 2007, as amended by Local Law 5 of 2017, applies "for as long as they remain qualifying owners, without regard to such ten year limitation". The Cold War Veterans Levels table (May 15, 2019): the county and most towns at 10% up to $8,000, White Creek at 15% up to $12,000, the Village of Cambridge at 10% up to $10,000; Easton and Putnam have none, and of the schools only Argyle is listed. A veteran with the alternative exemption cannot also take the Cold War one. Not adopted. The State's full exemption for veterans rated 100% permanently and totally disabled, Real Property Tax Law 458-a(11), is a local option; the Real Property director told the Government Operations Committee on July 21, 2026 that it would come back for decision before the March 1, 2027 taxable status date.
