Washington County Collector: Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption

The Washington County collector publishes its own disabled-veteran exemption page, read live in a browser on October 12, 2026: turn in the VA Summary of Benefits letter with proof of the eligibility date, annually by October 15, at the courthouse in Fayetteville, a Collector.DAV email, or the three revenue-office collector branches.

Also called: property tax, collector, DAV exemption, 26-3-306, homestead, personal property.

For: Veteran or service member, child, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's, under section 26-3-306, as the State's disabled veteran property tax entry explains. The Department of Veterans Affairs' property tax guide directs claimants to the local county collector's office. The county's own rules, from the Collector's "Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans" page read in a browser on October 12, 2026. Who qualifies: a permanent and totally 100 percent service-connected disabled veteran, "either through Service Connection, Unemployability", or the unmarried widow receiving DIC. The page quotes section 26-3-306 (special monthly compensation for loss or loss of use of limbs, total blindness, or service-connected 100 percent total and permanent). The veteran or widow must be on the personal-property assessment and the title, must be listed as the owner of the real estate, and must submit the Summary of Benefits letter to their mortgage company. While receiving the DAV exemption a veteran or widow is not eligible for the Amendment 79 homestead credit or the over-65 freeze. The widow must be in receipt of DIC compensation. How to apply. Provide a copy of the Summary of Benefits letter, which the VA mails each March; if it has not arrived by April 1, call 1-800-827-1000 or the District 2 veteran service officer, Terry Thurman, at 479-387-6610. A veteran adds proof of the eligibility date, such as the Rating Decision Form; a widow adds the same plus a Surviving Spouse Affidavit, downloadable from the page. Turn the documents in by mail, email or in person at the Washington County Courthouse or one of the three collector offices inside the State revenue offices (Fayetteville, Springdale or Lincoln). Deadline and fine print. The Summary of Benefits letter is due October 15 and must be turned in annually. The letter is a "multi-purpose" letter, and not every veteran who receives it is entitled to the exemption. A mover into Washington County from another Arkansas county submits the letter and notifies the prior county; a mover out contacts the new county's DAV agency. On a sale or purchase of the homestead, settlement papers are required and the taxes are prorated by ownership period; the home must be occupied to qualify, and rental property, special improvement taxes, city liens, sanitation, timber and land-only parcels do not qualify. The office cannot refund previous years if the letter was not turned in - the taxes are treated as voluntarily paid. The office. Washington County Tax Collectors Office, 280 N. College Ave., Suite 202, Fayetteville, AR 72701; (479) 444-1526; [email protected].
