Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's (Real Property Tax Law 458, 458-a and 458-b; see the New York entries), each at local option, so the county, each town and each school district set their own limits; file with the town or city assessor, in most places by March 1, with proof of discharge under honorable conditions. The county's levels. Real Property Tax Services' table (February 11, 2026): the county grants the alternative veterans exemption at level "K" and the Cold War exemption at level "A". At level K the alternative exemption is 15% of assessed value up to $36,000 for wartime service, a further 10% up to $60,000 for combat service, and a further share equal to half the disability rating up to $120,000, each maximum multiplied by the equalization rate. The towns use level H (Bolton, Glens Falls, Hague, Johnsburg, Lake George, Thurman, Warrensburg) or K (Chester, Horicon, Lake Luzerne, Queensbury, Stony Creek). Most school districts in the county grant no alternative exemption (level Z on the 2016 school table). The proposed full exemption. Resolution 377 of October 16, 2026 introduced proposed Local Law 8 of 2026, under Real Property Tax Law 458-a(11), providing that "the primary residence of a seriously disabled veteran shall be fully exempt from taxation and special district charges, assessments and special ad valorem levies", for a veteran discharged under honorable conditions (or with a qualifying condition, or a discharged LGBT veteran) whom the VA considers "permanently and totally disabled as a result of military service", shown by a VA letter or form that says so. The Board set the public hearing for November 20, 2026 at 10 a.m. in the Supervisors' Rooms; the law takes effect only once adopted and filed with the Secretary of State. Real Property Tax Services projected 122 eligible homes across the county and $70,686.92 of county tax shifted to other taxpayers. It would reach county taxes only; towns and school districts decide for themselves. Where. Real Property Tax Services, Municipal Center, Lake George; Director Kristen MacEwan; 518-761-6464.
