Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Wareham grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessors’ own Property Tax Relief Summary for fiscal 2026 gives $400 under clause 22 (a VA-certified rating of 10 per cent or more, a Purple Heart, or a surviving spouse), $750 under 22A, $1,250 under 22B, $1,500 under 22C, a full exemption of the tax under 22D and 22F, and $1,000 under 22E with a yearly VA letter at 100 per cent. These are the statutory amounts, and no local option is named. The assessors’ taxpayer-guides page otherwise links only the Department of Revenue’s generic veterans’ guide (Rev. 7/2019). The town’s full-time veterans’ service is the Cape Cod District Department of Veterans’ Services in Hyannis, which the Executive Office of Veterans’ Services’ directory lists for fourteen Cape towns and Wareham; the Veteran’s Agent page names Veteran’s Services Officer Vinnie Fountaine at the Multi-Service Center, 48 Marion Road (508-291-3100, extension 3135), in the office Mondays and Tuesdays. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Wareham Veterans Services: Cape Cod District Office. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

GateRule
A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
