Wakulla County's Code creates a grant of $50 a month, up to $600 a year, for residents of at least 180 days who served 30 days or more in a designated combat zone in 2002 or later, claimed by December 31 of the second year after the service; grants are capped at $10,000 a year in all and depend on the Board funding them.
Also called: combat duty grant, combat zone, deployment grant, military grant, Ordinance 06-60, section 2.278, Guard, Reserve, DD-214, Crawfordville, Panacea, St. Marks, Sopchoppy, Medart, Shadeville.
Article VII of chapter 2 of the Wakulla County Code (Ordinance 06-60, November 20, 2006) creates the "Active Military Combat Duty Grant Program" under the county administrator and the county veteran services office, "to assist in the maintenance and support of their families".
Who qualifies. Residents who lived in the county at least 180 days before entering a designated combat zone, served in the military, and were ordered into a currently designated combat zone in 2002 or a later calendar year. Active military combat duty covers active duty personnel, reservists and National Guard members in a combat zone "for a named United States military conflict (or veterans of such combat)". The Code names the zones of Executive Orders 13239 (Afghanistan) and 12744 (the Persian Gulf region, including Iraq and Kuwait), and lets the Board extend the grant to later zones by resolution; no such resolution was found in the year's Board records.
How much. $50 a month, prorated, up to $600 for a calendar year, after at least 30 days of combat duty in that year (section 2.280). Grants "are also subject to funds appropriated", and the county's total may not exceed $10,000 a fiscal year (section 2.282); the 2026-27 budget's Veterans Services lines carry no grant appropriation, so ask whether money is available before relying on it.
Applying. File with the county administrator or the designated office, on the county's form, by December 31 of the second year after the combat service, with certified proof of combat service (a DD-214, orders with dates, paid travel vouchers with orders, or a unit commander's or personnel office's letter) and either proof of homestead exemption and of the year's taxes paid, or proof of the 180 days' residence (any three of a valid state driver's licence, a school ID with photo and signature, utility bills, a personal cheque or credit card bills at a county address). A wilfully false statement disqualifies the applicant permanently and requires repayment. Start with the Veterans Services Office, (850) 926-0919 ext. 751.
