Wake County Veterans Services is a division of the county's Housing Affordability and Community Revitalization Department. "We work for you, not the VA." Its service officers are nationally and state accredited and trained in appeals, and they help with disability compensation, pension, health care enrolment, education benefits and survivors' claims, at no charge. The office serves only Wake County veterans and their families. Where and when. Walk-in help is limited to DMV tags, hunting and fishing licences and the property tax exemption. Other help. The office refers homeless veterans to the South Wilmington Street Center (men), Women Veterans Supportive Services and Oak City Cares, and helps obtain records from the Register of Deeds, Vital Records and the Clerk of Court. The county's Landlord Engagement Unit pays landlords incentives to rent to veterans and others leaving homelessness. Stand Down. Each June the county holds the Wake County Veterans Stand Down, a free one-day event with showers, meals, health screenings, benefits help, legal aid, clothing and veterinary care. It is open to anyone who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces "regardless of length of service or discharge status". The 2026 event was on June 6 at William Peace University.
