Virginia Beach Free Parking for Decorated and Disabled Veterans

Free parking in Virginia Beach city garages, lots, and meters for a vehicle with Disabled Veteran, Purple Heart, Medal of Honor, Prisoner of War, Pearl Harbor Survivor, or certain valor medal plates.

Also called: parking, meters, garage, Purple Heart, DV plates, Medal of Honor, oceanfront parking.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

City Code section 21-322.1 lets a veteran who has been issued certain special plates park without charge in a city parking facility or at a metered space. A person driving that veteran in the plated vehicle can use it too. The qualifying plates are Pearl Harbor Survivor, Purple Heart, Bronze Star or Silver Star, Air Medal, Navy Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, Air Force Cross, or Distinguished Flying Cross, Medal of Honor, Prisoner of War, and Disabled Veteran plates. Any service-connected rating qualifies for Disabled Veteran plates, so this reaches veterans well below 100%. The exemption covers the charge only. Time limits in city facilities and at meters still apply, and so do the rules for reserved spaces, such as spaces for people with disabilities that limit walking. The ordinance covers city parking facilities and meters only.
