Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's (35 ILCS 200/15-169 and 15-167); the Illinois entries give the current rules. The county's exemption page describes the "Disabled Veterans' Standard Exemption" as all of the equalized assessed value for a rating of 70% or more, $5,000 for 50% to 69% and $2,500 for 30% to 49%, and the "Returning Veteran Exemption" as a one-time $5,000 cut in the year a veteran returns from active duty in an armed conflict. Where the page is out of date. It still requires that the home's equalized assessed value be under $250,000 and that the veteran not be dishonourably discharged. Since tax year 2023 the State law exempts the first $250,000 of value with no ceiling on the home and drops the discharge test; a surviving spouse on Dependency and Indemnity Compensation now qualifies too. How. "You must apply for the exemption with the County Assessment Office", by the county's forms or by calling 217-554-1940; "After the initial application is approved, you will be mailed a renewal form each subsequent year." A veteran claiming the disabled veterans' exemption cannot also claim the persons with disabilities exemption. Supervisor of Assessments Nathan A. Byram, 201 N. Vermilion Street, Third Floor, Danville; 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
