Tuolumne County Assessor: Disabled Veterans' Property Tax Exemption

The Tuolumne County Assessor, 2 South Green Street, Sonora (209-533-5535), takes the State's disabled veterans' exemption on BOE-261-G; its page names a 100% service-connected rating, blindness in both eyes or the loss of use of two or more limbs, and leaves out the veteran paid at 100% for unemployability, whom the law also covers.

Also called: property tax, disabled veterans exemption, BOE-261-G, Assessor, Kaenan Whitman, unemployability, surviving spouse, low-income exemption, 209-533-5535, Revenue and Taxation Code 205.5, Sonora, Jamestown, Columbia, Twain Harte, Tuolumne, Groveland, Mi-Wuk Village, Pinecrest, Soulsbyville, Big Oak Flat, Chinese Camp, Long Barn, Strawberry.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's (Revenue and Taxation Code 205.5; see the California entry for the basic and low-income amounts and the filing dates). What the Assessor's page says. "If you are a veteran who is totally disabled (service related 100%), blind in both eyes, or have lost the use of more than one limb as a result of injury or disease during military service, you may apply for a disabled veteran's exemption. The benefit is also available to unmarried surviving spouses of qualifying veterans. For more information, or to receive an application, please call 209-533-5535." The page links the Board of Equalization's claim form, BOE-261-G, through the county's forms service. What it leaves out. Section 205.5 counts as totally disabled a veteran rated 100% or paid at the 100% rate because of individual unemployability; the page does not say so, so a veteran paid at 100% for unemployability should file anyway with the VA letter that says so. The page does not mention the higher low-income exemption or its household income test, or the filing dates (see the California entry). Assessor-Recorder Kaenan Whitman, 2 South Green Street, Sonora, CA 95370.
