The Clerk's own announcement. The Clerk of Courts' site (troupclerkofcourts.com) carries the May 17, 2024 announcement: "Preservation of Troup County Historical Military Discharge Records - May 17, 2024." Clerk Jackie Taylor, in office since 2000, "teamed up with Kofile, Inc. to preserve, restore and image the Military Discharge record books for Troup County"; the documents "are now housed in a Kofile Disaster Safe County Binder (DSB)", protected from fire, water, mold, humidity, pollutants, UV light, rodents and impact - protections the announcement ties to the 1973 National Personnel Records Center fire that destroyed approximately 16-18 million records. Conservation included surface cleaning, tape removal, deacidification, tear repair and encapsulation. The rules. "Jackie Taylor said military veterans are encouraged to file their discharge documents at the Troup County Superior Clerk of Court Office free of charge. She said that even if the documents have been recorded in another county, anyone moving there can also file the paperwork in Troup County. Military Discharge DD214's are no charge to file in any Georgia Superior Court Clerk's Office. Recording the documents assures that a copy will be available for your family in the event the original is lost or destroyed. The Military Discharge Records, DD214's, files are not open to the general public due to the sensitive and personal information they contain. However, family members of veterans who need access to the documents for research and other needs can go to the Troup County Clerk of Court Office and sign an affidavit stating they have reason to access a particular document." The State rule carries the rest: the clerk records a DD-214 or other discharge certificate free (O.C.G.A. 15-6-78(a), 15-6-77(i)), the record stays exempt from the Open Records Act for 50 years, and copies to the 15-6-72 classes go through the affidavit. Where. Troup County Clerk of Superior & State Courts, 100 Ridley Avenue, LaGrange (the Government Center); 706-883-1740; Jackie Taylor, 706-298-3694 per the announcement's contact line.
