Travis Central Appraisal District: Disabled Veteran Exemptions

The Travis Central Appraisal District describes the 100% homestead and partial exemptions as Tax Code 11.131 and 11.22 do, unemployability and service branch ratings included, but calls the line-of-duty spouse exemption one for a member "killed in action", where section 11.133 covers anyone killed or fatally injured in the line of duty, and leaves out a 100% surviving spouse's right to move the exemption to a new home.

Also called: property tax, appraisal district, TCAD, 11.131, 11.22, 11.133, 11.136, homestead, surviving spouse, line of duty, Austin.

For: Veteran or service member, child, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemptions are the State's; the Texas entries explain them. The Travis Central Appraisal District grants them for property in Travis County. What the district gets right. Its exemptions page states the 100% homestead exemption as section 11.131 does: 100% disability compensation with a rating of 100% or of individual unemployability. It states the partial exemption as section 11.22 does, from a 10% rating by VA or the service branch, with the $12,000 maximum for a veteran 65 or older, blind in one or both eyes, or who has lost the use of a limb. It lists the donated residence exemption and the 2025 exemption for the surviving spouse of a veteran who died of a condition presumed service-connected. Where it is narrower than the statute. Two places. Line of duty. The district heads the section 11.133 exemption "Surviving Spouse of an Armed Services Member Killed in Action" and says the spouse of a member "who is killed in action" qualifies. Section 11.133(b) covers the spouse of a member "killed or fatally injured in the line of duty", which includes a death in training or an accident on duty, not only in combat. Such a spouse should apply with the casualty report and cite the statute. Moving home. For the surviving spouse of a 100% veteran, the district gives the conditions for keeping the exemption on the home the couple lived in, but not section 11.131(d): a surviving spouse who has not remarried and moves can take the same dollar amount of exemption to the new homestead, with a certificate from the chief appraiser of the old home's district. Applying. Apply online, by mail, or at 850 East Anderson Lane, Austin 78752. The exemption helpline is 512-873-1560. The district acts on an application within 90 days and gives a right to protest a denial.
