The Tooele County Auditor takes the State's veteran exemption for a primary residence, up to $535,459 of taxable value by disability percentage, for a veteran with a qualifying rating and certain surviving spouses, with a DD-214 and the VA rating letter, online or in person; abatement and veteran applications are due September 1 each year (435-843-3312).
Also called: property tax, veteran exemption, 59-2a-501, 59-2a-502, September 1, Auditor, abatement, Board of Equalization, Tooele, Grantsville, Stansbury Park, Erda, Lake Point, Wendover, Dugway, Stockton, Vernon, Rush Valley.
The exemption is State law, Utah Code 59-2a-501 and 59-2a-502 since the 2025 recodification; the Utah entry explains the amounts (up to $535,459 of taxable value for 2026, scaled by the rating, nothing below 10%) and who qualifies. In Tooele County the Auditor takes the applications.
What the county says. The Auditor's handout: "Tooele County proudly provides property tax relief to qualifying veterans in recognition of their service and sacrifice. This exemption helps reduce the taxable value of a primary residence." Who may qualify: "Veterans with a qualifying disability rating" and "Certain surviving spouses (subject to state guidelines)". What you'll need: a copy of the DD-214 and the "Veterans Affairs disability determination letter". Apply online through the county website or in person at the Auditor's Office.
When. The Auditor's page lists "Abatement and Deferral Programs for Individuals and Veterans Due September 1 Annually", with the online application behind that link. A veteran whose rating changes should bring the new VA letter; the Auditor told the County Council in October 2025 that its busy season starts each January, "when the veterans receive their disability percentage letters".
How the county decides. The County Council, sitting as the Board of Equalization, approves each year's abatement and exemption list; on December 2, 2025 its 2025 list carried veterans' exemptions worth about $625 to $4,938 a parcel. A late or missed claim goes to the Council under 59-2a-502; ask the Auditor.
