Tioga County (Pennsylvania) Assessment Office: the Disabled Veterans’ Real Estate Tax Exemption Route

The Tioga County Assessment Office at the courthouse, 118 Main Street, Wellsboro, keeps the rolls the State's disabled veterans' real estate tax exemption lands on; the exemption itself is the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs' to grant, and the county's own exemption application PDF is the institutional form under 53 Pa.C.S.A. 8812, not a veteran route.

Also called: disabled veterans exemption, real estate tax exemption, 100% disabled, wartime, assessment, Board of Assessment Revision, 118 Main Street, 51 Pa.C.S. 8902, Wellsboro, Wellsboro, Mansfield, Elkland, Knoxville, Westfield, Blossburg, Tioga, Covington.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The State programme. The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs administers the veterans' real estate tax exemption for an honorably discharged veteran with a 100% permanent service-connected rating or individual unemployability from VA, or service-connected blindness, paraplegia or the loss of two or more limbs at any rating, wartime service as VA establishes it, ownership and occupancy of the home, and financial eligibility under the State Veterans Commission's guidelines (51 Pa.C.S. 8902 and Title 51 Chapter 89; see the Pennsylvania entries for the amounts, the surviving-spouse route and the Chapter 99 income exclusion). The county's part is the Assessment Office's: the exemption runs through the county whose rolls carry the parcel. How Tioga takes it. The county's Assessment page keeps the rolls, the appeal route ("any person (including taxing districts) aggrieved by any assessment and desiring to appeal, shall file a statement, in writing, with the Board of Assessment Appeals on or before September 1"), and the county's "Application for the Exemption of Real Estate Tax" - which asks the applicant to "IDENTIFY WHICH STATUTORY EXEMPTION UNDER 53 Pa.C.S.A. §8812 IS BEING APPLIED FOR (i.e., religious, public charity, other)", so it is the institutional exemption form, not a veteran route. The county publishes no veteran exemption form of its own; a Tioga veteran applies through the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, whose approval comes back to the parcel on the county's roll. The Board of Assessment Revision's address is the courthouse, 118 Main Street, Wellsboro, PA 16901.
