Thurston County Assessor: Senior, Disabled and Disabled Veteran Exemption

The Thurston County Assessor gives the veteran route as an 80% rating, 40% from 2027, and the top income limit as $59,000, $83,000 from 2027. It leaves out the statute's second route, a total rating paid for individual unemployability at any percentage.

Also called: property tax, assessor, 84.36.381, senior exemption, disabled veteran exemption, 40 percent, individual unemployability, combined disposable income, deferral, Steven Drew.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The exemption is the State's; the Washington entry explains it. The Thurston County Assessor administers it (360-867-2200, [email protected]), and Assessor Steven Drew, legislative chair for the State association of county assessors, pressed for chapter 163, Laws of 2026 (ESSB 6162). What the Assessor publishes. A "Disabled Military veteran has no age limit but must have a service-connected VA Disability Rating of 80% or greater (40% or greater beginning in 2027)", and income "cannot exceed $59,000 ($83,000 beginning in 2027)". Proof is a VA award or benefit verification letter showing the combined rating. The April 1, 2026 release says people already on the programme "will be moved by my office to the highest benefit level on January 1, 2027", and that an online application for new applicants goes live this fall. Where it differs from RCW 84.36.381. Subsection (3)(a)(ii)(B) also qualifies a veteran receiving compensation at "a total disability rating for a service-connected disability without regard to evaluation percent": a veteran paid at the total rate for individual unemployability qualifies at any schedular rating, before 2027 as after. The Assessor's pages mention only the percentage. The April release also credits the move from 80% to 40% to Senate Bill 6162; that change came from Engrossed House Bill 1106, chapter 200, Laws of 2025. For 2027 to 2029 the Department of Revenue sets Thurston's thresholds at $62,000, $72,000 and $83,000, with $92,559 for the deferral programme.
