Thomas County Vets Aid Fund, through the Logan County office

Thomas County’s section 80-102 Vets Aid fund has held $1,088.43 with no levy, no receipts and no payments since at least July 2024, and budgets all of it for 2026-2027; Thomas County veterans apply through Logan County’s officer, Richard Cook, on Tuesday afternoons in the Thedford courthouse, and the county’s page still asks for wartime service and an honorable discharge, tests the 2024 amendment removed.

Also called: Vets Aid, county veterans aid, CVA, fund 1900, 80-102, emergency aid, wartime era, Richard Cook, Logan County, Thedford, Seneca.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The officer. Thomas County's Veterans Services page lists Richard Cook, 308-636-6157, [email protected], at the courthouse, 503 Main St, Thedford, Tuesdays 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and on call any time - Logan County's Veterans Service Officer, whom Thomas County's Board appoints its own each year and pays for through Logan County (see the Logan County office entry, which also serves Thomas County). Its County Benefits page lists county veterans aid, a bronze grave flag holder, registration of DD-214s, homestead help, grave registration with a Presidential Memorial Certificate, and benefits counselling. What the page says. Thomas County's County Benefits page calls the CVA fund "a temporary emergency fund to assist veterans, their spouses, and dependents when there is an unforeseen emergency and there are no other resources available", for food, shelter, clothing, funeral, medical, dental and surgical items, applied for through the County Service Office, where the veteran "must demonstrate an 'inability'" to pay. The test it prints is out of date. The page limits the fund to veterans who "received an Honorable Discharge, and served during one of the defined 'wartime eras'". LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) struck the wartime-service test from section 80-102, which now reaches a veteran discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions), or who died in service, who has lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county, and a spouse, surviving spouse or minor child in need. A peacetime veteran, or one with a general discharge, should apply anyway. What the fund holds and pays. Thomas County's 2026-2027 budget printout's Vets Aid fund (1900) held $1,088.43 on July 1, 2024 and on July 1, 2025 and paid nothing in either year, with no receipts and no levy; the Treasurer's semi-annual statement for January to June 2026 shows the same $1,088.43 with nothing in or out. The budget offers the whole $1,088.43 as miscellaneous aid for 2026-2027, as it did for 2025-2026. How to apply. Through Mr. Cook on a Tuesday afternoon in Thedford, 308-636-6157. See the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion and the State's own aid fund.
