For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Article II of Chapter 12 of the Tazewell County Code levies an annual license tax on each motor vehicle normally garaged, stored or parked in the county, at "$20.00 per year" (sections 12-32 and 12-37, Ord. of 8-7-18(3)). The Treasurer's FAQ confirms the $20 fee is billed annually on the personal property tax tickets mailed in mid-October and due December 5, and that the county decal has been eliminated - no sticker is displayed. Section 12-30 incorporates by reference "[a]ny limitation upon the imposition of a license fee or tax under this article which is required by Code of Virginia, § 46.2-755", and section 12-33 exempts vehicles of residents who pay a town license tax. The state bar in section 46.2-755(B) of the Code of Virginia prohibits a county license fee on the one vehicle of a veteran with Disabled Veteran plates and on the qualifying vehicles of former prisoners of war and Medal of Honor, Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipients, so those veterans owe no Tazewell license tax through section 12-30. The county code names no veteran exemption of its own; a veteran who is billed one anyway should ask the Treasurer and cite section 46.2-755(B).
