Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

In Tazewell County the Commissioner of the Revenue, at 135 Court Street, Suite 301, Tazewell (276-385-1235), takes the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption. The county's "Real Estate Tax Exemption Application for Veterans" states the qualifications: a documented rating of 100% service-connected, permanent and total disability or a total 100% disability rating on the basis of individual unemployability; ownership held jointly or partially through recorded documentation; occupancy as the principal place of residence; and the exemption "includes the qualifying dwelling and the land, not exceeding one acre upon which it is situated". The form carries the statute's manufactured-home rule - a house or mobile home owned by the veteran and occupied as the principal residence is exempt even if the veteran does not own the land, and the land is not exempt if not owned by the veteran. A surviving spouse presents identification, the veteran's death certificate (death on or after January 1, 2011) and a certificate of marriage, and the form states the surviving-spouse exemption "applies without any restriction on the spouse's moving to a different place of residence" but the spouse must not remarry. Applications are available online and in the office, and the veteran refiles when the primary residence changes. What it is worth. The real estate tax rate is fifty-eight cents per $100 of assessed value, per the Commissioner's Real Estate page; the Department of Taxation's TY 2025 table records Tazewell County at 0.580 real estate, 2.000 personal property and 2.000 machinery and tools. The county's own relief code sets a lower cap for a disabled veteran under 65 - see the county's relief entry. The county's FAQ thanks veterans for their service and asks applicants to call 276-385-1235.
