Tazewell County Real Estate Tax Relief for the Elderly and Disabled Veterans
Tazewell County relieves up to $300 a year of real estate tax on the dwelling of an owner who is 65 or older - or a veteran with a permanent, total, service-related disability, whose own exemption is capped at $100 unless he or she qualifies by age - with income to $40,000 and net worth to $100,000. File by March 1.
Also called: tax relief, property tax, elderly and disabled, income limit, net worth, March 1, $300.
Sections 18-63 to 18-68 of the Tazewell County Code relieve real estate tax on the qualifying dwelling and land, and on a mobile home, of a head of household who is 65 or older on December 31 of the preceding year - or who is "a veteran of the United States Armed Forces who had been determined to have a permanent, total, service-related disability" before that date (section 18-65(2)). Title must be held or partially held on January 1 of the taxable year.
Income and worth. Total combined income of the owners and their relatives living in the dwelling cannot exceed $40,000, with $5,000 of each relative's income excluded (section 18-65(3)). Net combined financial worth cannot exceed $100,000, excluding the dwelling, up to one acre, and household furnishings (section 18-65(4)). A disabled veteran qualifies on the definition in section 18-65(5) - unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of a service-related impairment expected to result in death or last for life - with certification from the Department of Veterans Affairs "conclusive proof".
Amount and filing. Section 18-67 caps the combined real estate and mobile home exemption at $300 a year, and caps the disabled-veteran exemption at $100 per veteran "unless he or she shall otherwise qualify for exemption hereunder by reason of his or her age". The county's FAQ confirms the $40,000 income limit, the $100,000 net worth limit, the $300 maximum, and the March 1 annual filing deadline - applications received or postmarked after March 1 are not accepted.
It is not a VA rating of 100% service-connected, and a disabled veteran who does not meet that test can use the age-65 track when old enough and the disabled track otherwise.
