The district describes the exemption as Tax Code 11.131 does: a veteran who receives 100% disability compensation for a service-connected disability and has a rating of 100% or of individual unemployability gets the whole homestead exempt. Send VA documentation showing the 100% compensation, the effective date of the service-connected disability, and the 100% or unemployability rating. Surviving spouse. The district says the unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran who qualified can keep the exemption on the home that was the residence at the veteran's death, and can move a flat dollar amount to a later home. It asks for VA documentation naming the surviving spouse. Donated residence. A Texas resident veteran rated 10% or more who owns and lives in a home donated by a charitable organization gets a partial exemption set by the rating, and an unremarried surviving spouse may keep it. Send the VA letter showing the percentage, proof of the donation, and a Texas driver licence or ID. File with the district's Exemption Division in the tax year for which the exemption is sought.
