Suwannee County Property Appraiser: Veteran Exemptions
Suwannee County's Property Appraiser lists the $5,000 exemption for a veteran disabled 10% or more, the full exemption for a service-connected total and permanent disability and the 65-plus combat-related discount, all due March 1 at 215 Pine Ave SW, Suite B, Live Oak (386-362-1385); its page cites the wrong statute for the discount and adds a five-year marriage test for surviving spouses that neither statute sets.
Also called: property appraiser, homestead, 196.24, 196.081, 196.082, 196.173, DR-501, DR-501DV, DR-501M, March 1, Ricky Gamble, surviving spouse, Live Oak, Branford, Wellborn, Dowling Park, McAlpin.
The exemptions are the State's; the Florida entries explain them. The Suwannee County Property Appraiser (Ricky Gamble, CFA) publishes one exemptions page, a dates page and a forms page.
What it lists. "$5000 Disabled Veteran (Section 196.24, F.S): Any ex-service member who is a permanent resident of Florida and is disabled at least 10% in war or by service-connected misfortune is entitled to a $5000 exemption", proved on first filing with "a certificate from the United States Government". The "Service-connected total and permanent disability exemption" for "Any honorably discharged veteran with a service connected total and permanent disability, surviving spouses of qualifying veterans and spouses of Florida resident veterans who died from service-connected causes while on active duty", on homestead property, proved with a certificate from the U.S. Government or VA. The "Disabled Veterans Homestead Property Tax Discount" for a veteran 65 or older with an honourable discharge and a permanent, combat-related, service-connected disability, equal to the VA percentage, on form DR-501DV. And the deployed military exemption under section 196.173 on form DR-501M.
Where the page is wrong or narrower than the law.
- It cites the combat discount to "Section 193.461, F.S.", the agricultural classification statute; the discount is section 196.082.
- Under the total and permanent exemption it says the unremarried surviving spouse is entitled if "on the date of the disabled ex-service member's death, had been married to the disabled ex-service member for at least 5 years". Section 196.081(3) carries the exemption to the surviving spouse with no length-of-marriage test, until remarriage or sale, and section 196.24 gives the $5,000 to the unremarried surviving spouse with none either. A surviving spouse married fewer than five years should apply.
- It does not say that both veteran exemptions can be filed before the VA letter arrives and granted back to the filing date, as sections 196.081(5) and 196.24(2) provide, and it names the wheelchair veteran exemption of section 196.091 only inside the disabled persons' exemption.
- Its dates page lists the "$5,000 - Disabled Veteran's Exemption" and the DR-501DV discount but not the total and permanent exemption.
