Surry County "Thank a Veteran" Discount ID Card (certified at Veterans Services, issued at the Register of Deeds)
Surry County's "Thank a Veteran" Discount ID Card Program, running since November 11, 2015, gives county veterans merchant discounts: bring the DD-214 and a photo ID to the Veterans Services Office in Mount Airy for certification, take the certification to the Register of Deeds in Dobson (veterans whose DD-214 is already recorded there need only a photo ID), and present the card at participating merchants; cards issue Monday to Friday 9:00 to 4:30.
Also called: Thank a Veteran, discount card, veteran ID card, merchant discount, DD-214, certification, Register of Deeds, Veterans Services, Mount Airy, Dobson, Merchants Discount List, Mount Airy, Dobson, Pilot Mountain, Elkin, Jonesville, State Road, Toast, White Plains, Siloam, Lowgap.
The programme. The county's page: "We are excited to announce our new 'Thank A Veteran' discount ID card program that began November 11, 2015. This program will allow Surry County Veterans to receive discounts from participating merchants by presenting their Surry County Veterans ID Card."
The route. "To get started, all a Veteran needs to do is bring in their DD214/Discharge form along with a valid photo ID to the Veteran Services Office in Mt. Airy for certification then take that certification to the Register of Deeds Office in Dobson, NC. Veterans who already have their DD214 recorded with the Surry County Register of Deeds still must get it certified with Veteran Services in order to receive the Veterans Discount ID card." The certification process is "in place to prevent fraudulent applicants": "The reality is we do see people trying to pass other veterans documents as their own for benefits. We are simply making sure that does not happen in this case to disrespect the military and our community in receiving discounts they are not entitled to nor deserve." Cards are issued Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (the Veterans Services page; the Register of Deeds' own page says 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
The merchant side. A Merchant List of participating businesses with addresses, discounts and exclusions hangs under "Thank A Veteran" Discount ID Card Program on both the Veterans Services and Register of Deeds homepages; the application form for merchants is the county's "Veteran's Discount Application Form" PDF. The Register of Deeds page adds the card's disclaimer: "issued for the sole purpose of receiving discounts from participating local merchants. It is not a valid photo ID for determining actual identity or residency. It is NOT issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs."
Where. Veterans Services Office, Surry County Resource Center, 1218 State Street, Mount Airy (336-783-8820); Register of Deeds, 201 E. Kapp Street (P.O. Box 303), Dobson (336-401-8150).
