For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Sumner County levies a county motor vehicle privilege tax, the wheel tax, collected by the County Clerk at registration. Section 5-8-102 exempts any disabled veteran with one hundred percent permanent total disability from a service-connected cause, and any former prisoner of war, as VA determines it, "upon submission of evidence of such disability" to the officer who collects the tax; see the Tennessee entry, which also covers vehicles bought with a VA adapted-vehicle grant. What the County says. Its notice "For Sumner County Veterans" tells permanent and total veterans they are eligible for the waiver "and maybe a refund", and asks those who renewed tags in 2024 to come to the County Clerk at the County Administration Building on Belvedere Drive, Gallatin, with registration information and one of: a VA decision letter, decision code sheet, decision narrative or benefit verification letter. It explains how to tell a rating is permanent and total from VA's letters, for example a grant of Dependents' Educational Assistance "as the evidence shows you currently have a total service-connected disability, permanent in nature". The County Clerk's own site says nothing about the exemption; ask at the counter or by phone before renewing online, which charges the tax.

GateRule
One hundred percent permanent and total, service-connectedSection 5-8-102 exempts a veteran with one hundred percent permanent total disability from a service-connected cause, as VA determines it. It is recorded rather than enforced because a former prisoner of war, and a veteran whose vehicle came with a VA adapted-vehicle grant under 38 U.S.C. 3901, are exempt at any rating.
Permanence is part of the testThe section asks for permanent total disability. A one hundred percent rating VA expects to improve does not meet it.
Or a former prisoner of war, or an adapted-vehicle grantAny former prisoner of war is exempt, and so is a vehicle bought with a VA grant under 38 U.S.C. 3901, whatever the rating.
