Sumner County's Trustee takes applications for the state's disabled veteran property tax relief, which has no income test, by phone or online appointment, within 35 days after the February tax deadline. Its page describes the relief as for totally and permanently disabled veterans and widows, leaving out the route for paraplegia, blindness or the loss of two limbs at any rating.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Tennessee's disabled veteran property tax relief is a state payment toward the tax on the first $175,000 of a home's value; the Tennessee entries set out the rules. In Sumner County the Trustee, Room 107 of the County Administration Building, 355 N. Belvedere Drive, Gallatin, takes the applications when tax bills go out, by appointment at 615-452-1260 or online, and says they must be completed no later than 35 days after the February tax payment deadline, the statutory 35 days from delinquency. What the page says. It lists "Tax Relief – Total and permanent Disabled Veterans and Widow/Widower of – Not income based", and describes the programme as for disabled veterans and the surviving spouse of a disabled veteran or of a veteran whose death resulted from a service-connected cause. What it leaves out. Section 67-5-704(b) has three routes for the veteran: paraplegia or permanent paralysis of both legs and the lower body, legal blindness, or the loss or loss of use of two or more limbs from a service-connected cause, at any rating; a service-connected permanent and total disability as VA determines it; and one hundred percent permanent total disability from having been a prisoner of war. A veteran with a qualifying loss and a lower combined rating should apply. No county match. Some counties add their own payment under 67-5-701(j), as Hamilton County does; the Trustee's page describes none and no Commission resolution adopting one was found. City taxes, such as Hendersonville's or Gallatin's, are billed separately.

Thresholds

Thresholds for Sumner County Trustee: Disabled Veteran Tax Relief
GateRule
Permanent and total, as VA determines itThe state relief, as the Sumner County Trustee administers it. The rating route in 67-5-704(b)(3) asks for service-connected permanent and total disability as determined by VA, which a veteran paid at the total rate through unemployability that VA has found permanent also holds. It is recorded rather than enforced because the paraplegia, blindness and loss-of-limbs route and the prisoner of war route need no rating at all.
Or a named loss, at any ratingParaplegia or permanent paralysis of both legs and the lower body, legal blindness, or loss or loss of use of two or more limbs from a service-connected cause qualifies whatever the combined rating, as does one hundred percent permanent total disability from having been a prisoner of war. The state entry on disabled veteran property tax relief sets out the routes.
