Suffolk Vehicle License Fee Exemption for Disabled Veterans and Former Prisoners of War

Suffolk charges no local vehicle license fee on vehicles owned or leased by disabled veterans and former prisoners of war shown in DMV records, or on vehicles of nonresident service members stationed in the city.

Also called: license fee, decal, DV plates, POW, military orders, LES.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Section 82-824 of the Suffolk City Code exempts from the city's vehicle license fee "vehicles owned or leased by disabled American veterans, and prisoners of war as reflected in the records of the Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles". The ordinance does not limit it to one vehicle and covers leased vehicles, which is wider than the one-vehicle state mandate in section 46.2-755(B). It also exempts vehicles owned or leased solely by members of the armed forces living in the city with permanent residence elsewhere, shown by a Leave and Earnings Statement. Proof goes to the Commissioner of the Revenue, and a change in status has to be reported within 30 days.
