Suffolk County Resident Veteran ID Card, Discounts and Reserved Parking
Suffolk County's Veterans Service Agency issues a free resident veteran ID card, in person in Hauppauge, that local businesses honour for discounts and that comes with a hanging tag for the veterans-only spaces at County buildings and parks.
Also called: veteran ID card, discount program, hanging tag, veteran parking, Suffolk County Code 639-39, Resolution 488-2007.
The Suffolk County Resident Veteran ID Card Program began under Resolution 488-2007. Participating businesses set their own discounts, and the agency approves each business and posts the list.
How to get one. Go in person to the main office, H. Lee Dennison Building, 100 Veterans Memorial Highway, Hauppauge, 3rd floor (visitors use the east lot entrance), Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; no appointment is needed. Bring a driver's licence or non-driver ID with your Suffolk address (with a piece of mail if the licence shows a P.O. box) and a DD-214 showing an honorable discharge; a DD-214 for initial active duty for training only does not count. A veteran with a VA rating brings the rating decision. Only the original and two replacements are ever issued.
Reserved parking. Suffolk County Code 639-39 has the Department of Public Works and the Parks Department reserve two spaces near the entrance at each County facility and park with a lot of 30 or more spaces for veterans. A vehicle parked there must show a veteran licence plate or the hanging tag the agency issues with the ID card (639-43); parking there without one is a fine of up to $100.
The discharge test. The card asks for an honorable discharge, which is the agency's rule; no County law found sets it. Ask the agency if your discharge is general under honorable conditions.
