Suffolk Half-Rate Vehicle Tax for Certain Disabled Veterans

Suffolk taxes one vehicle of a veteran with limb loss, blindness, or a permanent and total service-connected disability at half the city’s vehicle rate, but not in addition to the 100% exemption.

Also called: car tax, reduced rate, half rate, personal property, amputee, blind.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Section 82-202 of the Suffolk City Code taxes not more than one motor vehicle owned and regularly used by an eligible disabled veteran at 50 percent of the city's motor vehicle rate. The class follows Code of Virginia section 58.1-3506(A)(19): loss, or loss of use, of one or both legs, or an arm or a hand, blindness, or permanent and total disability, service-connected. Limb loss or blindness qualifies at any rating. A veteran may have only one vehicle in total under this rate or the city's 100% permanent and total exemption in section 82-203, so the two do not stack. The rate does not carry over to a new vehicle; the veteran files again with the Commissioner of the Revenue on any purchase, sale, or trade, and it is not applied to earlier years. The ordinance names "the department of veterans affairs" as the certifying agency; the statute names the Virginia Department of Veterans Services.
