Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Assessment Department’s veterans brochure requires residency by the October 1 assessment date and an honorable discharge filed by September 30, and sets the exemption at $4,000. The disability schedule it prints is $8,000 for a 10 to 25 percent rating, $10,000 for 26 to 50 percent, $12,000 for 51 to 75 percent and $14,000 for 76 to 100 percent or age 65 and over, which it marks as amended by Public Act 19-171. The statutory amounts are $1,000 under 12-81(19) and $2,000 to $3,500 under 12-81(20); the brochure’s higher figures are those amounts raised by the revaluation increases of 12-62g, and the same ratio holds across every tier. The brochure adds that a qualified veteran is automatically entitled to an additional exemption, twice the exemption if income-qualified, with income limits it prints as $45,200 single and $55,100 married, the 12-81l amounts for the 2025 grand list; a biennial application is required. A veteran rated 100 percent permanently and totally disabled has the dwelling exemption of 12-81(83), applied to the dwelling or, if the veteran owns no real estate, one motor vehicle, claimed annually by January 1. OLR’s 2023 survey recorded Stonington as offering the 12-81h exemption of one specially equipped motor vehicle and the 12-81kk primary-residence exemption, 10 percent of assessed value for a veteran with adjusted gross income of $50,100 or less. Stonington’s brochure mentions neither, and no Stonington ordinance was found: the town’s code is on no host that could be read. Ask the assessor which options apply.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
