Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Stoneham grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessors’ FY2027 Exemption Guidelines give $400 under the veterans’ clauses for a rating of 10 to 99 percent, $1,000 for a 100 percent rating with a letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs filed each year, and a full exemption for the surviving spouses of active duty personnel and of veterans whose death resulted from their service, for service members missing in action presumed dead, for paraplegic veterans and for veterans rated 100 percent for service-connected blindness. These are the statutory amounts, and no local option is named; no town meeting vote was found in the town’s online records. The guidelines’ residence test, six consecutive months’ domicile before entering service or five consecutive years, is keyed to July 1 of the tax year, where the statute now asks two consecutive years before filing. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Stoneham Veterans Services. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
