Stevens County Assessor: Senior, Disabled and Disabled Veteran Exemption
The Stevens County Assessor (215 S Oak Street, Room 101, Colville; 509-684-6161) takes the State's property tax exemption, but its pages describe only the senior and disabled routes and an income limit of $45,000; from 2027 a veteran rated 40% or more, or paid at the total rate, qualifies at any age, and Stevens County's thresholds rise to $44,000, $51,000 and $58,000 with a $7,500 standard deduction a person.
Also called: property tax, assessor, 84.36.381, senior exemption, disabled veteran exemption, 40 percent, combined disposable income, SB 6162, standard deduction, Treasurer, Colville, Chewelah, Kettle Falls, Springdale, Northport, Marcus, Loon Lake, Clayton, Hunters, Addy, Valley, Ford, Wellpinit, Evans.
The exemption is the State's; the Washington entry explains it. The Stevens County Assessor administers it from the courthouse, 215 S Oak Street, Room 101, Colville (509-684-6161).
What the county publishes. The Assessor's Property Tax Relief Programs page: "If you are a Senior Citizen (61 or older) or Disabled person with your primary residence in Washington State, the Senior & Disabled Persons Exemption program offers a reduction in property tax if you meet all ownership, residency and income qualifications (under $45,000 a year beginning with the 2023 assessment for 2024 tax year)." It does not mention the veteran route. The Treasurer's exemption page gives the same tests ("at least 61 years of age OR permanently disabled", income "of $45,000 or less") and says "Failure to re-apply yearly or report a status change may result in denial", though RCW 84.36.385 asks for a renewal application only when the Assessor sends notice, at least once every six years, and a change of status report in between. The Assessor's application does carry the box "I am or my spouse is a Veteran with a service-connected disability with a rating of ___%", with the rating left blank, and asks for the VA determination letter; it lists veterans' disability benefits and dependency and indemnity compensation among the income that is not counted.
What the law now says. Chapter 200, Laws of 2025 lets a veteran with a combined service-connected evaluation of 40% or more, or a total disability rating at any percentage (which reaches a veteran paid for individual unemployability), qualify at any age for taxes collected from 2027; for taxes collected in 2026 the floor was 80%. Chapter 163, Laws of 2026 adds a $7,500 standard deduction per applicant and excludes Combat-Related Special Compensation from income from the 2027 tax year. The Department of Revenue's thresholds for Stevens County for 2027 to 2029 are $44,000, $51,000 and $58,000, with a deferral threshold of $65,173; the $45,000 on the county's pages is the older single limit. Claims for 2027 rest on 2026 income, so bring the 2026 income documents and the VA letter.
The Assessor's page also links the Department of Revenue's Property Tax Assistance for Widows/Widowers of Veterans, a State grant (see the Washington entry).
