The office. "The Steuben County Veteran's Service Office is responsible for assisting veterans, their spouses, dependents, and survivors with information and assistance concerning Veterans benefits through the Federal and State Levels." It helps with obtaining a DD-214; service-connected and non-service-connected disability claims; education and G.I. Bill benefits; low income pension; survivor benefits; VA medical care; the home loan guarantee; vocational rehabilitation; burial benefits; property tax abatement; remission of fees for children of disabled veterans; motor vehicle licence plates; peddlers' and vendors' licences; the resident veteran hunting and fishing licence; and the Golden Hoosier Passport. Alex Dobson, 317 South Wayne Street, Suite 2B, Angola, IN 46703; (260) 668-1000 ext. 1060; Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; "Appointments may be requested after hours." The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs' directory gives the office mailbox [email protected] and the fax (260) 665-8483. The page lists American Legion Posts 31 (Angola), 257 (Fremont) and 423 (Orland) and VFW Post 7205 (Angola). Property tax. The office's "Indiana Veteran Property Tax Reform 2026" flyer, posted September 24, 2026, says every veteran and surviving spouse with the old deductions "MUST register for property tax credits" on "State Form 51186" "After July 1, 2026 and before Dec. 30, 2026". That form and deadline are out of date. File State Form 12662 with the County Auditor by January 15, 2027 for taxes due in 2027; a totally disabled veteran who had the old $14,000 deduction must file again to get the new 100% deduction, or the county applies only the $250 credit. The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs says State Form 51186 "is no longer used", and the service officer can complete the form's Section VIII certificate. See the Indiana entries on the 100 percent deduction and the $350 and $250 credits. The board's year. The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs' district service officers updated the Commissioners on March 3, 2026 (Mark Gourley) and October 20, 2026 (Katie Jordan, "Northeast Veteran Service Officer", "regarding Northeast Veteran Affairs for 2025 and 2026"). On August 4, 2026 the office brought an agreement with the Northeastern Center, the county's community mental health centre; the Commissioners tabled it until the Center presents it.
